Offcuts, a bespoke line of paper goods, was born of a collaboration between award-winning artist Beth Nelson and Dauphine Press founder and letterpress printer Trish Kinsella. Smart, spare and sustainable, this line of stationery is dedicated to using materials already on hand in the Dauphine Press studio. The "offcuts" are derived from larger sheets of premium paper. Each Offcuts design repurposes this beautiful heavyweight card stock. These limited edition designs are ideal for your thoughtful musings, or to dispatch a note of distinction.
When large parent sheets of paper are trimmed down to a specific size, there are often extra stacks of paper which are left over. This by-product is referred to as an "offcut." In most pressrooms, this leftover paper is often destined for the recycling bin. Too small to be re-used on press yet too precious to be thrown away, "Offcuts" repurposes this paper. Our new line of products gives a second life to materials already on hand in the studio, and our mission revolves around recreating what already exists.
The offcuts line began with three simple boxes: Bagatelle, Nota Bene, and Capriccio. Each of the boxes are hand-covered with pages from vintage books discarded from libraries. Text pages used to cover the boxes range from opera librettos, French textbooks, Korean dictionaries and scientific journals. No two boxes will ever be the same as each is made by hand.
Each box is filled with a stack of premium heavyweight paper or "offcuts", from which Dauphine Press stationery is also printed. Inside each box lies a mindful quote, printed in letterpress. Bagatelle includes two stacks of paper side by side and also includes an original work of art by Beth Nelson.
We are currently designing other products from offcuts, as we continually look at any waste in the Dauphine Press studio with a different eye. We are also proud to be collaborating with Studio Printworks in New York. Using the strike-offs from this artisan company's sophisticated line of hand-printed wallpaper provides us with another opportunity to repurpose print waste into objects of style and utility.
Offcuts may be purchased online at store.dauphinepress.com or through select retailers.
Offcuts is proud have been included in Domino Magazine's "green" issue in March 2007 and in Daily Candy.
